1- Alexander, innanzitutto ti chiediamo di parlarci un po’ di te, per conoscerti meglio, chi sei, cosa ti piace, i tuoi interessi, i tuoi hobbies, ciò che ami fare.

Scrivere è sempre stato un mio amore, anche se è stato un professore universitario ad accendere la mia immaginazione e mi ha mandata lungo la pericolosa strada della pubblicazione. Mi ci sono voluti molti anni per raggiungere alcuni dei miei obiettivi di scrittura. Vengo dagli Stati Uniti - Kansas in origine, ma ora vivo in Florida. Faccio molti viaggi, principalmente di ricerca per i miei libri e leggo ogni giorno. Suono anche il piano e compongo musica quando posso. Sono molto felice a casa in compagnia di questi interessi, i quali occupano gran parte del mio tempo, oltre a prendermi cura del mio cane adottato.

2- Come è cominciata la tua carriera letteraria? Quali sono state le difficoltà iniziali? Quali gli eventi della svolta che ti ha portato al successo internazionale?

Volevo scrivere da molti anni e ho provato e riprovato, come fa la maggior parte degli scrittori, a trovare un agente e un editore. Questo è successo molto prima che nascesse la pubblicazione indipendente. Credimi, è difficile trovare un buon agente e un ottimo editore o casa editrice. Sono fortunato ad avere entrambi, adesso. La difficoltà era, naturalmente, l'infinito giro di rifiuti. Non ho mai mollato, (è questo  il segreto di tutta la faccenda). Uno scrittore deve imparare ad essere persistente. Non so se posso definirmi un "successo internazionale", ma ho avuto la fortuna di vendere in un certo numero di paesi e lingue. Ciò deriva dall'avere un libro che gli editori vogliono.

3- Per tornare al soggetto della nostra recensione, “Al servizio di Adolf Hitler” che è un libro molto amato. Quali pensi siano stati i principali motivi di questo successo?

Posso indicare una delle ragioni principali per il successo di The Taster: è una storia raccontata da un altro punto di vista, una che è stata usata raramente prima, almeno nei mercati occidentali. Molti dei commenti che ho ricevuto sono sulla falsariga di "Non ho mai letto nulla di simile prima". Questo mi rende felice, ma l'ispirazione per il romanzo è nata da una storia vera. Sono sempre alla ricerca di storie fresche, e se sono basate sulla realtà è ancora meglio.

4- Rimanendo a Tester, come è nata l'idea del libro? Com’è nata la storia di Magda?

Diversi anni fa una donna di nome Margot Woelk rivelò che lei era un assaggiatrice di cibo per Adolf Hitler. Aveva ormai 95 anni e non aveva mai raccontato a nessuno della sua vita segreta. Quando ho letto la storia dell'Associated Press, mi è venuto in mente il mio personaggio: una ragazza tedesca ordinaria che è stata gettata in questa posizione precaria, a poca distanza da Hitler. La vera storia ha acceso la mia immaginazione e non mi ha più mollato. Molte volte ho pensato che nessuno avrebbe avuto l’interesse di leggere di un’assaggiatrice di cibo per Hitler, ma Magda non mi avrebbe mai lasciato rinunciare al libro. Continuava a costringermi a tornare alla tastiera. Se sei una scrittrice, capirai questa sensazione.

5- Quale è la differenza fra scrivere un romanzo completamente di fantasia e uno invece storico? Nel caso di un racconto storico, preferisci restare strettamente legato ai fatti realmente accaduti o aggiungere qualcosa di nuovo per renderlo più avvincente?
La finzione lascia libera l'immaginazione di andare ovunque, specialmente nella scrittura di genere. Prendi Fantascienza, per esempio, o Fantasy. Vengono creati mondi interi che non hanno nulla a che fare con la realtà terrestre. La maggior parte della narrativa di finzione ha comunque alcune basi nella realtà. Il crimine, la letteratura, le donne, il romanticismo, ecc. sono finzioni di solito ambientate in luoghi che conosciamo e con una storia con la quale possiamo relazionarci. Scrivere narrativa storica può essere difficile perché altre persone (gli storici, diciamo) sono esperti di un argomento che lo scrittore potrebbe aver appena iniziato a studiare. I lettori ti chiameranno per i tuoi errori e questo, penso, rovina la tua credibilità. A me piace rimanere il più vicino possibile ai fatti piuttosto che abbellire la storia.

6- Come si svolge la tua giornata da scrittore? Hai un luogo preferito dove trarre ispirazione?

La mia giornata di scrittura dipende da come la voglio usare. Alcuni giorni scrivo la mattina, altri giorni nel pomeriggio, a seconda del mio programma. Cerco di scrivere per tre o quattro ore, che includono anche le mie modifiche al lavoro del giorno precedente. Non ho un posto preferito per l'ispirazione. Sedersi sulla sedia sapendo che ho una scadenza che incombe, è la mia ispirazione.

7- Quali sono i segreti per scrivere un libro di successo? Quali suggerimenti daresti agli aspiranti scrittori, per riuscire a creare un'opera di valore? Quali sono le cose più importanti?

Vorrei avere i segreti per scrivere un libro di successo. Gran parte di esso è tempismo, fortuna, ecc. Penso che gli scrittori dovrebbero lavorare sul libro che li ispira, che accende la loro immaginazione, perché se non sono entusiasti del lavoro, nessun altro lo sarà. Gli scrittori dovrebbero leggere il più possibile tutti i generi e dovrebbero scrivere, non importa quanto doloroso o difficile possa essere. Prenditi un giorno o due di riposo, rinnova lo spirito creativo, ma non lasciare che il libro muoia. Finisci il lavoro; altrimenti, non hai nulla da vendere. Nonostante quello che dicono gli altri scrittori, credo nel blocco dello scrittore, ma c'è un'enorme differenza tra l'essere psicologicamente bloccato e l'essere pigro. Il primo potrebbe richiedere un trattamento per superarlo. Il mio consiglio finale a riguardo è di scrivere un libro diverso. Più facile a dirsi che a farsi, ma ne vale la pena. Prenditi il ​​tempo per pensare al libro, analizza altri lavori della tua categoria, cerca l'idea insolita anche in un genere abusato.

8- Quali altri ambiti di scrittura ami scrivere?

Ho scritto romanticismo, orrore e suspense psicologica. Mi piacerebbe scrivere un thriller, un giorno.

9- Ora parliamo dei tuoi progetti futuri. Quale sarà il tuo prossimo libro? E quali sono in programmazione?

Sono sotto contratto per altri due libri (su cinque) per Kensington. Sto scrivendo il quarto libro ora. Mi riporta alla Germania della seconda guerra mondiale e al movimento di resistenza lì esistente. Sarà pubblicato nel 2020. Il quinto libro dovrebbe essere pubblicato nel 2021 e si svolgerà durante prima guerra mondiale, a Boston e in Francia. Sono entusiasta per entrambi.

10- Infine, non so se sei stato mai in Italia. C'è qualcosa che ti piace particolarmente del nostro paese? Hai mai scritto o pensato di scrivere qualche racconto ambientato in Italia? Hai qualche scrittore italiano che preferisci?

Sfortunatamente non sono stato in Italia, ma spero di fare presto un viaggio. Mi piacerebbe scrivere un libro ambientato nel Rinascimento, quindi ...

Ho letto Italo Calvino e Primo Levi. Questi sono i due che mi vengono in mente per primi.

1- Hi Alexander, first of all we ask you to talk a bit about yourself, to know you better, who you are, what you like, your interests, your hobbies, what you love to do.
Writing has always been a love of mine, although it was a college professor who fired my imagination and sent me down the perilous path of publishing. It's taken me many years to achieve some of my writing goals. I'm from the States--Kansas originally, but now living in Florida. I do a lot of traveling, primarily research for my books, and I read every day. I also play piano and compose music when I can. I'm very happy at home with these interests, which take up a great deal of my time, along with taking care of my adopted dog.

2- How did your literary career begin? What were the initial difficulties? What were the events of the turning point that led you to international success?
I wanted to write for many years and tried and tried, as most writers do, to get an agent and a publisher. This was long before indy publishing came into being. Believe me, it's difficult to find a good agent and a wonderful editor and publishing house. I'm fortunate to have both now. The difficulty was, of course, the endless rounds of rejection. I never gave up--the secret to this business. A writer must learn and be persistent. I don't know if I can call myself an "international success," but I have been fortunate to sell in a number of countries and languages. That comes about from having a book that publishers want.
3- To return to the subject of our review, “Tester" which is a much loved book. What do you think were the main reasons for this success?
I can point to one main reason for the success of The Taster--it was a story told from a different point of view--one that had rarely been used before, at least in Western markets. Many of the comments I've received are along the lines of "I've never read anything like this before." That makes me happy, but the inspiration for the novel came from a true story. I'm always on the lookout for stories that are fresh, and if they are based in fact that's even better.

4- Remaining in Tester, how did the idea of ​​the book come about? How was the story of Magda born?
Several years ago a woman named Margot Woelk revealed that she was a food taster for Adolf Hitler. She was 95 years old at the time and had never told anyone about her secret life. When I read the Associated Press story, my character came into my head--an ordinary Germany girl thrust into this precarious position within spitting distance of Hitler. The true story fired my imagination and wouldn't let me go. Many times I thought no one will want to read about a food taster for Hitler, but Magda wouldn't let me give up the book. She kept forcing me back to the keyboard. If you're a writer you'll understand that feeling.

5- What is the difference between writing a completely fictional novel and a historical one? In the case of a historical story, do you prefer to stay closely linked to the facts that actually happened or add something new to make it more compelling?
Fiction lets the imagination go anywhere--especially true in genre writing. Take Science Fiction, for example, or Fantasy. Whole worlds are created that have nothing to do with earth-based reality. Most fiction has some basis in reality, however. Crime, literary, women's, romance, etc., are fictions usually set in places we know and with a history we can relate to. Writing historical fiction can be difficult because other people (historians, let's say) are experts in a subject the writer may have just begun to study. Readers will call you out on your mistakes and this, I think, ruins your credibility. I like to stay as close to the facts as possible rather than embellishing the story.

6- How is your writer's day? Do you have a favorite place to get inspiration?
My writer's day is what I make of it. Some days I write in the morning, other days in the afternoon depending on my schedule. I try to write for three to four hours, which also includes my edits of the previous day's work. I have no favorite place for inspiration. Sitting in the chair  knowing that a deadline is in front of me is my inspiration.

7- What are the secrets to writing a successful book? What suggestions would you give to aspiring writers to be able to create a work of value? What are the most important things?
I wish I had the secrets to writing a successful book. So much of it is timing, luck, etc. I think writers should work on the book that inspires them, that fires their imagination, because if they aren't excited about the work no one else will be. Writers should read in all genres as much as possible and they should write no matter how painful or difficult it may be. Take a day or two off, refresh the creative spirit, but don't let the book die. Finish the work; otherwise, you have nothing to sell. Despite what other writers say, I believe in writer's block, but there's a huge difference between being psychologically blocked and being lazy. The former may require treatment to get over. My final tip is to write a book that is different. Easier said than done, but well worth the effort. Take the time to think the book through, analyze other works in your category, look for the unusual idea even in a well-worn genre,

8- What other areas of writing do you like to write?
I've written romance, horror, and psychological suspense. I would love to write a thriller someday.

9- Now let's talk about your future plans. What will your next book be? And what are they planning?
I'm under contract for two more books (out of five) for Kensington. I'm writing the fourth book now. It takes me back to WWII Germany and the resistance movement there. It will be released in 2020. The fifth book should be released in 2021 and takes place in WWI Boston and France. I'm excited about both of them.

10- Finally, I do not know if you've ever been to Italy. Is there something you particularly like about our country? Have you ever written or thought about writing a story set in Italy? Do you have any Italian writer you prefer?

Unfortunately, I haven't been to Italy but I'm hoping to make a trip soon. I'd love to write a book set in the Renaissance, so....I've read Italo Calvino and Primo Levi. Those are the two that come to mind first. I'd like to end by saying, I appreciate all my readers and I give big thanks to all for your support.
